Copper and Fiber are the two media types for structured cabling systems
Depending on the requirement for
- Speed – 1G / 2.5G / 5G / 10G / 40G / 100G
- Distance – 100m / 1000m / 10000m
- Environment and Network Topology the correct type of medium have to be used.
- POE – Power Over Ethernet is a recent concept wherein Data/Voice/Video is transmitted on the same cable along with Power, hence the strict adherence to standards and quality of products and implantation is required.
Fibre – Compared to copper cable
Fibre has a much larger bandwidth, Fiber has a much lower attenuation
Fibre is unaffected by electromagnetic interference, Fiber does not radiate electromagnetic energy
Fibre is small and light, the smaller the core, the lower the attenuation, the higher the bandwidth.
But more difficult to terminate and measure so, small core fibre such as 9/125um are usually used in long-distance telecom applications.
50/125um and 62.5/125um are usually used in short-haul datacomms applications.
